Research Focus
Grounded in clinical neuropsychology, our research examines how people remember to carry out future intentions and how these abilities change with aging and brain diseases. We combine neuropsychological assessment, cognitive tasks, experience sampling, neuroimaging and psychophysiological methods to investigate cognitive processes and their neural and physiological bases, and to explore interventions that support cognition and everyday functioning. We also develop and validate culturally appropriate cognitive assessment tools for use in Taiwan to inform clinical interpretation and application.
The following sections highlight some of the research topics our lab has focused on in recent years.
Prospective Memory
Prospective memory is the ability to remember to carry out an intention at the appropriate time, such as taking medication or attending an appointment. We investigate how intentions are formed, maintained, and executed, and why completed intentions may continue to interfere with ongoing activities. We also examine how spontaneous thoughts about the future relate to remembering intentions in everyday life.
Cognitive Aging & Neurocognitive Disorders
We study cognitive changes across typical aging, subjective cognitive decline, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia, with particular interests in prospective memory, attention, and executive function. By integrating neuropsychological assessment with neuroimaging, we examine relationships between cognition, brain morphology, and functional connectivity, and evaluate measures that may help identify early cognitive changes.
Cognitive Interventions & Mind-Body Interactions
We investigate how cognitive strategies, including mental imagery, may support memory and the execution of intentions. Through collaborative research, we also examine relationships among autonomic function, cardiovascular health, and cognition.
Test Development
Our scope includes translating and culturally adapting existing questionnaires, evaluating their reliability and validity, and developing scales informed by local needs. We also integrate neuroimaging method to investigate the neural correlates underlying neuropsychological test performance, providing empirical support for their interpretation and clinical use.
